Coastal Remodel Design Process in Newport Beach, CA
Welcome to the behind the scenes of a coastal remodel in Newport Beach, CA.
This property sits in front of a canal, so yes—coastal design was basically a groundbreaking discovery here. We’re calling it innovation. The people may call it “expected.” Naturally, we leaned into it.
At Jonathon’s Coastal Living, a coastal furniture store and design studio in Costa Mesa, CA, we specialize in coastal interior design and remodel projects that balance contrast, materiality, and livable restraint—designing spaces that don’t just acknowledge the water, but respond to it with intention.
So walk through this coastal remodel process with us from first conversation to finished result—smoothly, and swimmingly.
Setting the Direction for a Newport Beach Coastal Remodel
We met with a bachelor client who was refreshingly direct and mostly obedient—which, in design terms, is a rare and appreciated combination.
From there, we defined scope, scale, timeline, and whether the project—and we—were actually a good fit. The best coastal remodel projects move forward when there’s alignment on vision, communication, and how inspiration becomes a real, buildable design direction.
This Newport Beach remodel had early clarity, a strong point of view, and just enough trust to keep things moving without overcomplicating it.
Because before anything becomes a coastal interior, everyone has to agree on the direction—especially when it comes to materials, lighting, and how quickly confidence disappears when three finishes are placed next to each other under natural light.
Defining Scope and Investment Planning
Once aligned, we developed a proposal outlining scope, timeline, and investment for the Newport Beach remodel.
This is where coastal design becomes structured. Decisions shift from concept to execution planning, and clarity becomes just as important as creativity.
Transparency is essential. Remodels are not guesswork, and setting expectations early prevents the process from becoming a series of expensive adjustments later.
From there, the coastal remodel moves forward with a defined roadmap and clear intent.
Shaping the Coastal Interior Design Concept
With alignment in place, we moved into concept development—where inspiration starts becoming something buildable.
This is where we use Pinterest inspiration to shape concept and mood boards, while also selecting materials and defining color direction for the coastal interior design. What looks effortless at concept stage now requires structure, sequencing, and real-world decision-making.
It’s also the stage where opinions are still welcome—but quietly filtered through a streamlined approval system (also known as the design team).
From here, the process stops being conceptual and becomes real.
Managing Construction and Design Details
With the coastal design finalized, we moved into execution—where everything begins happening at once.
This is the phase where walls get demoed, materials arrive, timelines overlap, and the job site becomes a coordination of trades, sequencing, and decisions that suddenly matter in real time. It’s also where things can almost fly off the handle—though thankfully, we prefer to select them instead.
To keep everything grounded, we create a detailed spec binder—essentially the construction bible for the project. It’s what the GC, the client, and our team all reference to stay aligned when things inevitably get… dynamic. The juxtaposition is hard to miss: a clean, highly organized binder guiding its way through the chaos of a remodel.
In this case, our client took a strong lead on project management, and we were there to guide, confirm, and occasionally agree with decisions that had already been confidently made.
The process is controlled. Mostly.
The Result: Coastal Living in Newport Beach
In the end, the remodel came together as intended—coastal, but not predictable; clean, but not cold; intentional, but still livable.
It’s a balance of materials, light, and contrast that feels effortless without ever being accidental.
For a bachelor coastal interior, that balance matters. Nothing overly precious, nothing overly complicated—just a space that functions well, looks refined, and doesn’t require explanation to live in.
At Jonathons Coastal Living in Costa Mesa, CA, we create remodels that feel considered from start to finish, shaped by experience and a strong sense of what works.
No seashell clichés were harmed in the making of this project.
